Eastern League All-Star Game
Cut Short Due To Fog And Rain

The Connecticut Defenders welcomed the stars of the Eastern
League to Dodd Stadium for the 2007 Eastern League All-Star Game
on Wednesday, July 11th. Unfortunately as the stars of the league
rolled into Dodd Stadium so did a thick, heavy fog, which led to
the game being postponed with two outs in the top of the third inning.
Despite the interruption from the weather, the 6,512 fans that attended
the game were still treated to an evening of fun and exciting events,
including an autograph session with the All-Stars and the Eastern
League Home Run Derby, which was won by New Hampshire's Sergio
Santos.
At
the time the game was suspended the score was tied 2-2. The Northern
Division opened the scoring when Eugenio Velez led off the
first inning with a single, advancing to third base on a throwing
error, and scored on a groundout in front of his hometown crowd.
New Hampshire's Rob Cosby added to the Northern Division
lead in the second inning when he led off with a triple and came
around to score on a groundout. In the top of the third inning the
Southern Division evened the score on a two-run single by Erie's
Jackson Melian, which turned out to be the final play of
the game before it was postponed.

Southern
Division Wins
2006 E.L. All-Star Game

Altoona's Brett Roneberg had three hits, including
a game-winning, two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the sixth
inning, as the Southern Division All-Stars edged the Northern Division
by a score of 5-3 in the 2006 Eastern League All-Star Game at Blair
County Ballpark.
Following the game Roneberg was awarded with MVP honors.
Despite
heavy rains late in the afternoon, a franchise record crowd of 9,308
fans were on hand for the game. That attendance total is not only
a new franchise record, but is also the largest crowd ever for an
Eastern League All-Star Game.

Northern
Division Rallies Past
the Southern Division in the
Eastern League All-Star Game

Portland
infielder Kenny Perez drove in what proved to be the game-winning
run in front of his home town crowd when he hit a two-out, two-run
double in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Northern Division
All-Stars to a 9-6 victory over the Southern Division in the 2005
Hannaford Eastern League All-Star Game at Hadlock Field.
Perez,
when went 1-for-2 in the game, wasn't the only Sea Dogs player that
put on a show for the sold out hometown crowd. Shortstop Hanley
Ramirez, who started the game and was replaced by Perez in the
top of the sixth inning, went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and
a run scored.
Following
the game New Britain first baseman Danny Matienzo was named
the MVP of the contest. Matienzo was certainly deserving of the
award as the went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and one
RBI to lead the Northern Division to a victory.
If
the Southern Division had held onto their lead Akron outfielder
Jon Van Every would have been a top candidate for the MVP
award, as he blasted a pair of homers and drove in three runs in
the game.
In
a game which featured five lead changes, it is no surprise that
there were a number of offensive highlights. Other repeat hitters
in the game included B-Mets catcher Mike Jacobs and Norwich
outfielder Carlos Valderrama, who had two hits apiece. Along
with the two home runs hit by Van Every, Erie's Maxim St. Pierre,
Harrisburg's Edgar Gonzalez and Trenton's Shelley Duncan
each went deep in the game. Duncan also hit quite a few home
runs during the pregame ceremonies, as he outslugged all of the
competition to win the Western Union Home Run Derby.
Trenton's
Justin Pope pitched a scoreless eighth inning to pick up
the win and New Hampshire closer Lee Gronkiewicz worked a
scoreless ninth to earn the save. Akron
hurler Chris Cooper took the loss in the game after giving
up four runs on four hits in the bottom of the eighth inning.
